The Position
Public Service Interns receive training and complete a variety of assignments in staff activities directly relating to their major course of study while enrolled in an educational institution.
The Nevada DIVISION OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES (DCFS) is seeking individuals currently enrolled and pursuing an undergraduate degree, that have a passion and desire to make a difference in the lives of Nevada's children! This is an excellent opportunity for individuals working towards a degree in a human services field to begin a career in Child Welfare. DCFS oversees child welfare services in the large urban areas of the state, and provides the child welfare system in the rural areas of Nevada. The rural system includes child protective services, child welfare services, and clinical and case management services. The child welfare programs respond to caregiver maltreatment/neglect of children and also address children's needs to achieve permanency and well-being through provision of foster care services, adoption services, independent living services, and clinical services. As a Public Service Intern within our Rural Child Welfare Programs you would have the opportunity to work with and learn from experienced, caring, health care professionals dedicated to serving Nevada's children, families and communities. You would assist and participate in the process for determining social service needs for adolescent clients and families, developing appropriate solutions and care coordination plans, and collaborating with agencies in the community to serve clients and families. This is a challenging and rewarding position that will provide you with experience that may assist in qualifying you for permanent status at the end of your academic program.
The DIVISION OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES (DCFS) has offices in all 17 Nevada counties. Depending on the candidates chosen and the Child Welfare Programs needs the Public Service Intern positions may be located in Carson City, Caliente, Elko, Ely, Fernley, Fallon, Pahrump, Reno, Tonopah, Winnemucca or Yerington. DCFS can provide flexible work schedules as these are part time positions that include a variable work agreement. In addition the State of Nevada and DCFS offer an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental and vision insurance, participation in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), and a pro-rated accrual of up to 15 days of annual and sick leave, paid holidays and no city, county, state or social security tax! DCFS also encourages education by providing on-going trainings and paid education release time. DCFS together in partnership with families, communities and other governmental agencies provides support and services to assist Nevada's children and families in reaching their full human potential. We recognize that Nevada's families are our future and children, youth and families thrive when they live in safe permanent settings, experience a sense of sustainable emotional and physical wellbeing, and receive support to consistently make positive choices for family and the common good. DCFS is an extremely complex organization with incredibly dedicated and professional staff committed to serving Nevada's youth and families.
