JOB INFORMATION
Work Type: Permanent, full time vacancies as they may occur
in this geographical location.
Agricultural Police Officers are field agents and inspectors (peace officers) of the Department of Agriculture, and as such, enforce all State agricultural laws and regulations.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.
This position is located in the Las Vegas office of the Department of Agriculture and will be responsible for providing law enforcement of Interstate USDA and Nevada plant and animal health requirements; coordination with Clark County law enforcement; and protection of public health and safety in Southern Nevada. The incumbent will conduct highway stops on out of state vehicles to verify documentation on interstate transportation of nursery stock or plant material; inspects vehicles from quarantined states for actionable quarantine insects; and provides enforcement support to program staff on regulatory activities involved in the Nevada Department of Agriculture noxious weeds, nursery and pest control licensing programs. Provides law enforcement duties for all livestock or animal related events or incidents, to include animal health inspection requirements; theft of livestock and animal cruelty; and monitoring of animals entering the Las Vegas area from other states and international locations, inspecting for zoonotic and non-endemic diseases that can pose significant public health and economic consequences. This position may work nights/weekends/holidays and may be subject to standby/callback. This recruitment will be used to underfill an Agriculture Enforcement Officer II. Automatic progression may occur upon the supervisor's approval and when minimum qualifications of the higher level have been met.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience working with and caring for large livestock on a ranch or similar setting; OR an equivalent combination of post-high school education and relevant work experience that provided entry level knowledge, skills and abilities.
Special Notes
Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
Agricultural Enforcement Officer II and III must maintain Category II peace officer status approved by the Nevada Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training (POST).
Special Requirements
Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must first submit to a pre-employment screening test for controlled substances.
A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
This position may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays and may be subject to standby/callback.
This position has a 50% travel requirement.
