The Position
Positions in this series manage, supervise and participate in wildland and structural fire suppression; medical, hazardous materials, and other emergencies; fire prevention and education; presuppression; equipment and facility maintenance; and forestry and fire law enforcement. Manage, supervise and participate in functional areas of fire protection; compile information, develop plans and make recommendations concerning training, prevention, suppression, emergency operations, fuels management, support services and administration.
Under general direction, the incumbent is responsible for managing, administering and supervising the operations of the two districts in the southern region. Because the region is limited in geographical area, the position functions as both the Battalion Chief and Fire Management Officer.
This position is the Fire Management Officer for the Southern Region. The incumbent will provide operational direction, training and supervision to assigned staff. They are also responsible for the fire program budget for Southern Nevada; grant administration; and coordination of planning, prevention and suppression operations in cooperation with other Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) staff, dispatch centers and other fire agencies and cooperators.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in forestry, fire science or closely related field, and three years of professional experience in fire or natural resource management in areas such as fire suppression and fuels management; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Forester III, with required certifications, or Battalion Chief in Nevada State Service.
Special Notes
    Some positions in this series are required to obtain and maintain a Nevada commercial driver's license with endorsements as specified by the agency.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Applicants may be required to pass a thorough medical examination and physical agility test prior to appointment and for continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this class must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    Applicants may be required to undergo a background investigation prior to being considered for employment.
    All positions in this series must have certifications as identified by the agency at the time of application.
    Incumbents must obtain additional certifications, as identified by the agency, within one year of appointment, and must maintain those certifications as a condition of continuing employment.
Additional Position Criteria
    A current Red Card showing the following qualifications (or higher) is required and copy must be attached to your application: 1) NWCG Firefighter I and II 2) Engine Boss or Crew Boss Single Resource 3) Incident Commander Type 4 4) Strike Team Leader Engine 5) Task Force Leader 6) Division Supervisor
The Examination
Fire Management Officer
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

1) Please provide the number of years you have been involved with fighting wildland fires.
2) Describe your experience in wildland fire prevention and suppression, including defensible space. Please include the number of years, agency you worked for and a description of the type equipment and environment.
3) Describe your experience in: 1)fuels/vegetation management; 2) prescribe fire; and 3) development of land management plans
4) Describe your experience in working with Volunteer Fire Departments and/or Combination Departments.
5) Describe your experience in making presentations and in public speaking.
