The Position
Museum Directors are responsible for the overall leadership, operation, planning, and management of a State museum in conformance with professionally accepted museum practices and standards for the management of collections held in the public trust and interpretation of those collections through research, exhibitions, education, and public programs.
This position works within the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs' Division of Museums & History, located in Carson City, NV. The Nevada State Railroad Museum, one of seven museums in the Division, was established in 1980 and focuses on the role that railroads played in the settlement and development of Nevada with the collection and interpretive emphasis on railroad development and impact in the 19th century. The Museum Director provides leadership and sets priorities to advance the mission and vision of the museum within larger goals established at the Department and Division level. The incumbent supervises the work of 10 staff in multiple program areas such as public service, education and outreach, facility maintenance and management, and a railroad equipment restoration program. The museum has distinguished itself among transportation museums through the restoration program with a number of restored locomotives and cars supporting the seasonal public railroad operations or used in interpretive exhibits within the museum. On average, the museum handles 30,000 visitors annually and about 20,000 passengers on the demonstration railroad. Critical to the museum's success is its volunteer program. Approximately 125 active volunteers serve as an adjunct flexible workforce providing services including admissions and orientations, museum store sales, docents, and operation of the trains. The museum is presently open to the public five days a week, Thursday through Monday, necessitating working some weekends and holidays.
