The Position
Emission Control Technicians perform a variety of inspection, investigation, and technical assistance activities to ensure compliance of state-licensed emission control stations and emission control inspectors with federal and State laws and regulations regarding vehicle emissions, and to assist and inform the public regarding the state's emission control program.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Incumbents will carry out administrative assignments to include: Collect, evaluate, and disseminate public complaints, assist in developing and updating procedures, compile statistical reports, review licensee applications, maintain equipment, conduct research, write reports of findings, prepare vehicles and documentation to implement covert audits, and testify as a witness for the Division. Assist in the testing and approval of equipment and software related to the program. Provide information and interact professionally with the public, licensees, and other agencies. At a journeyman level, utilize an array of emission testing/diagnostic equipment when inspecting light and heavy-duty vehicles. Maintain knowledge and expertise in gasoline/diesel automotive engines and emission system design/theory; and, the cause and effect of vehicle exhaust emissions. Identify engines and required emission devices to determine compliance with emission laws/regulations. Conduct training assignments to include: Scheduling and instructing 1G Inspector training classes, administering exams, compile and record tests results, conduct remedial trainings and violator classes, assist in developing/updating training/testing materials, provide on the job training to new hire Technicians, and attend training to maintain license status. Conduct field assignments to include: Compliance audits of Authorized Emission Stations, licensed Inspectors, and emission testing equipment. Inspect vehicles at licensed sales lots for emission compliance; and, ride along in a marked police unit with a uniformed Officer when roadside testing over-the-road diesel trucks for emission compliance. The technician must possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently. NOTE: In addition to the fingerprinting, DMV also requires an online pre-employment criminal history check. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    One year of experience as an Emission Control Technician I in Nevada State service; OR equivalent experience in another jurisdiction.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    For Emission Control Technician II positions, a Class I Nevada State Emission Inspector's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    This position requires the ability to work outside in varying weather conditions.
    This position requires the ability to lift a 60 pound object to and from the bed of a truck.
    This position requires the ability to lift 20 pounds overhead for 5 minutes.
Additional Position Criteria
    This position requires experience directly related to diagnosis and repair of vehicle emissions.
    This position requires having a variable work schedule that may include Saturdays, evenings, and 4 - 10 hour workweeks.

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.
