The Position
Equipment Mechanics-in-Training work under direction of a journey level mechanic and serve four years in training including seminars and on-the-job training.
This position is located within District II, in the Carson City Equipment Shop. Under the supervision of a journey level mechanic, incumbent will serve four years in training including seminars, and on-the job training. Duties include performing preventative maintenance inspections, and checking all equipment systems for proper and safe operation. THIS RECRUITMENT WILL BE USED TO UNDERFILL A HIGHWAY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC 1 POSITON. UPON MEETING THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SATISFACORY PERFORMANCE, AND WITH APPROVAL OF THE APPOINTING AUTHORITY, INCUMBENT MAY PROGRESS TO THE JOURNEY LEVEL. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of experience in an automotive repair shop or service station; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and completion of a three-credit postsecondary course in vocational automotive mechanics; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    The Equipment Mechanic-In-Training Program requires that incumbents spend one year at each level during which they receive specialized training, and progression to the next level in the series may only occur upon completion of training and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. Failure to complete the training within the specified time frame will result in termination from the program unless there are extenuating circumstances which will be reviewed by the appointing authority.
Special Requirements
    Incumbents are required to furnish their own mechanic's tools.
Additional Position Criteria
    A Class A or B commercial driver's license, including appropriate endorsements will be required within six months of appointment, and as a condition of continued employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law requires random testing form controlled substances during employment.
