The Position
Communications Systems Specialist's perform specialized electronic technician work involving the fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and modification of 24-hour communication systems such as two-way radio and microwave equipment, mountaintop base stations, towers and antennas.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
The purpose of the Communications Systems Specialist II position is to maintain the operational capability of the Nevada State Parks statewide 24-hour communication system by performing engineering, fabrication, installation, maintenance, modification, troubleshooting and repairs directly or through other agencies and contractors. This position will monitor and confirm all radio equipment operation is within FCC rules and regulations and meets the states standards; and maintain extensive statewide radio inventory. The agency's statewide 24-hour communication system consists of high level and low level radio repeater systems, vehicle based communication systems, structure based communication systems, and hand held portable radios. Manage all Federal Communications Commission Radio Station License activities to assure full compliance with FCC Rules and Regulations. The Communications Systems Specialist II also develops specific radio user programs based on the communications needs of each regions or parks geographical area; performs radio programming or arrange to have radios programmed with supplied programs; designs, updates and modifies existing programs to accommodate changes to Nevada State Parks. This position requires occasional emergency response during non-working hours including holidays.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Associate's degree in electronics technology or equivalent with course work in algebra, trigonometry, schematics, electronics laboratories, corrective maintenance procedures and technical writing courses and three years of technical electronics experience, one year of which included installing, maintaining and repairing communications and ancillary equipment; OR completion of trade school, military or college training to the certificate level in electronics technology which included theory of communication technology and three years of technical electronics experience, one year of which included installing, maintaining and repairing communications and ancillary equipment; OR one year of experience as a Communications Systems Specialist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    Some positions require extensive travel.
    Applicants must submit proof of certification of competency issued by one of the following: National Association of Radio Telecommunication Engineers (NARTE), Association of Public Safety Communications Officers (APCO), or National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER); or possess a Federal Communication Commission (FCC) radio-telephone license.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
Additional Position Criteria
    Experience with analog and digital VHF land mobile radio systems is required.
