The Position
Highway Maintenance Workers are certified by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to operate a variety of complex or specialized highway maintenance and construction equipment in order to restore and maintain the integrity of roadway surfaces; maintain roadside slopes, shoulders, culverts and ditches to restore drainage and prevent erosion; and repair or replace related roadway appurtenances such as guardrails, markers, guide posts and fences.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
All living things depend on water, yet few people recognize that water is a limited resource. Less than one percent of the earth's water is drinkable freshwater; it is certainly important to maintain its quality. NDOT is looking for candidates ready to make water quality a top issue in their daily lives! This position is located in the Stormwater Division, Elko. Under general supervision of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor I, incumbent will use resources and education to maintain adherence to strict environmental regulations. The mandates set forth are critical, as the success of future generations depends on adherence to the clean practices of today. **THIS IS AN UNDERFILL FOR A HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER 4, incumbent may progress to the next level upon meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with approval of the appointing authority.** Women and under-represented groups are encouraged to apply. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of experience following certification in the operation of complex or specialized highway maintenance and construction equipment as designated by NDOT; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Position Criteria
    A valid Class A commercial driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    This position requires working alternate shifts and outside of traditional business hours. The hours are subject to change based on the needs of the appointing authority. Typical shifts include four 10-hour shifts or five 8-hour shifts.
    A letter of certification in the operation of complex or specialized highway maintenance or construction equipment, from a current or previous employer is required to be attached to your application at the time of submittal. Failure to attach this letter may result in the denial of your application.
    Certification must be in the form of a letter from a current or previous employer and must include dates, hours, and types of equipment used. This letter must be presented on official business letterhead and be signed by the appointing authority.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law requires random testing for controlled substances during employment.
