Substance Abuse Counselors perform professional duties in areas of screening, assessment, case management, education, and treatment of clients and perform related administrative duties and recordkeeping in accordance with the standards and requirements of the Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Counselors.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Substance Abuse Counselor II's (SAC II's) perform professional duties in the assessment, case management, group facilitation, treatment planning, and oversight of therapeutic community of inmates. This position will perform initial intake of inmates as well as comprehensive assessments; conduct individualized and group counseling sessions. Substance Abuse Counselors provide instruction in areas of cognitive behavioral therapy, therapeutic community modules, social learning theory, and behavioral learning theory. They will use video aides, role playing, group discussions, written exercises, and homework assignments. Incumbents meet with inmates individually as clinically indicated by inmate's progress or treatment issues. SAC II's will write concise, logical, analytical reports assessing the progress of individuals enrolled in the program and make oral group presentations during group counseling. They will also coordinate release with the state department of Parole and Probation relative to discharge planning. SAC II's also provide in-service training regarding counseling programs, education and services related to alcohol and drug abuse. They prepare statistical documentation and reports on caseload activities and services.

Certification as an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor by the State of Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Counselors. |

Licensure as a Certified Counselor or Licensed Counselor from the Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Counselors is required at the time of application and as a condition of continuing employment. |

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. |
