The Position
DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.

This recruitment is intended to fill statewide vacancies mostly located in the Parole & Probation (P&P) Division, Highway Patrol and Capitol Police. You will be tested in Las Vegas or Carson City for the physical agility examination so please indicate your preferred test location in your application. Las Vegas testing will be 8/27/2016, 9/24/2016, 10/01/2016 and 10/15/2016. Carson City testing will be on 8/26/2016 and 9/23/2016 Also, test dates are subject to change (rain for example). You MUST bring a completed background packet to your job interview (not the physical agility test). Failure to bring the completed background packet will delay the processing of your background investigation NOTE - THIS RECRUITMENT WILL CLOSE WHEN SUFFICIENT APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation as a Category I Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and one year of law enforcement or experience in a police or fire agency; OR one year of experience as a DPS Officer I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicant must meet current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment.
    Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy.
    Some DPS Officer II positions are granted a salary adjustment of 5% for complex investigative responsibilities or the supervision of DPS Officer II's performing complex investigations that require additional experience and expertise. These positions will be identified at the time of recruitment and are assigned to the Investigations Division, State Fire Marshals Office, Major Accident Investigation Team, and the State's Fusion Centers. Specific duties assigned to DPS Officer II positions are described in the Benchmark Descriptions
    DPS Officer II's, as a condition of continuing employment with the State Fire Marshals Office, must successfully complete the National Fire Academy's Arson Investigation course (R205) or an approved equivalent course within one year of appointment.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Statewide travel is required.
    This position is subject to call-out or call-back.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a felony in this State or of any offense, which would be a felony if committed in this state.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of any offense involving the illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them.
Additional Position Criteria
    Have you been notified that you failed a Department of Public Safety backgrounds process within the past 18 months or twice all time?
    Have you ever been guilty of any crime involving moral turpitude or of infamous or notoriously disgraceful conduct? Note: A guilty conviction includes probation, community supervision, or deferred adjudication for the purposes of this application.
    Have you ever resigned in lieu of termination or been terminated from any civil service employment for substantiated misconduct involving dishonesty? Note: termination has not been reinstated as a result of a judicial action or any available appeal or remedy relating to the resignation or termination, including, without limitation, any civil service appeal, direct administrative appeal or collective bargaining remedy. Also, "dishonesty" includes untruthfulness, deception, misrepresentation, falsification, and dishonesty by admission or omission.
    Have you ever engaged (sold, manufactured, cultivated, trafficked prescription medication) in any of the activities listed below for drugs, narcotics or illegal substances, including marijuana?

The Examination
1)*A POST Category I Pre- Screening Physical Agility exam which consists of a vertical jump of 11.5 inches, Agility Run in 23.4 seconds; 24 sit-ups in 1 minute; 18 push-ups (not timed); a 300 meter-run in 82 seconds; and a 1.5 mile run in 20 minutes and 20 seconds.
2) Extensive background investigation.
3) Drug test
4) Polygraph
5) Physical examination
If you are hired as a DPS Officer when you get to the academy you will need to pass a POST Category 1 Physical Agility test which consists of a vertical jump of 14 inches, Agility Run in 19.5 seconds; 30 sit-ups in 1 minute; 23 push-ups (not timed); a 300 meter-run in 68 seconds; and a 1.5 mile run in 16 minutes and 57 seconds.

Application Evaluation Exam
The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.
