Chemists analyze air, water, tissue, milk, petroleum products, antifreeze, soil, cement, paint, construction materials, pesticide residue and other samples; operate sophisticated laboratory instrumentation; identify and document sample contents and contaminants; provide testimony to State boards, lawmakers and industry; and maintain records of results.
This position works within the Department of Agriculture's Plant Industry Division located in Sparks, NV. The selected candidate will be responsible for analyzing pesticide samples according to EPA guidelines; reviewing product labels; identifying active ingredients, known problem areas and possible contaminants; and performing analysis as required; developing and validating new analytical methods and participating in method validation collaborative studies; analyzing generated data and calculating results; generating reports summarizing results. The incumbent will also analyze fertilizer samples and other material samples as required, as well as perform instrument maintenance and repair.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry or closely related field and two years of professional experience as a chemist in a laboratory setting; OR one year as a Chemist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
