The Position
The Nevada DIVISION OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES (DCFS) is recruiting for a Vocational Teacher - Youth Services to be located in Elko, NV. The Vocational Teacher instructs, evaluates, and grades adjudicated juveniles assigned to the Nevada Youth Training Center. The Teacher accounts for students and ensures they remain in custody by observing students during school functions and class changes, checking daily attendance and immediately reporting any deviations from a regular control roster, and monitoring students' behavior during class including verbal and nonverbal communication to ensure students comply with classroom behavior and safety policies and to detect volatile situations before they evolve into an altercation. The Teacher provides positive reinforcement by communicating to students what is academically and behaviorally expected in the classroom and at the facility; acknowledging student problems and conflicts and suggesting alternative methods of resolution; serving as a role model; awarding points for positive educational and behavioral accomplishments; verbally reprimanding students; and completing observation reports, documentation, and incident reports in order to call serious behavior problems to the attention of the principal, home life staff, and treatment team members. Instruct students in a discipline or field by providing both classroom instruction and hands-on training (on the job training) to teach vocational skills, work ethics and appropriate safety for the skill; evaluate student's progress through written and oral assignments and practical work evaluation to assess progress towards educational goals; evaluate students on quality of work, initiative, attitude, ability to follow instructions and peer relations to assess progress toward attitudinal goals.
This is a permanent position open for ANY vocational endorsement. Up to two (2) positions are available. DCFS programs include child protective and welfare service delivery in rural Nevada and oversight of urban county-operated child protective and welfare services, children's mental/behavioral health treatment and residential services (outpatient and inpatient acute) in urban Nevada, and statewide juvenile justice services including state-operated youth training centers and youth parole. DCFS is an extremely complex organization with incredibly dedicated and professional staff committed to building strong communities through strengthening families.

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Possession of a Special Occupational Business and Industry license issued by the Nevada Department of Education.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
