The Position
Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to mentally ill and/or mentally and physically ill or disabled individuals, in an institution or outpatient setting.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Conducts health assessments in clinics including physical assessments, obtaining blood pressure, temperature, measurements, developmental assessment, and other data on health history, diet history and family health status. Administers immunizations, TB, and STD medications, educates clients on potential side effects and monitors for adverse reaction. Collaborates with MD, other health care providers, professionals, and community representatives in assessing planning, implementing and evaluating programs for community health. Performs various tests such as pregnancy, tuberculosis, HIV, sexually transmitted diseases and communicable diseases and makes the appropriate program referrals; Collaborates with supervising APN as needed. Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, and test analyses as required by CLIA in accordance with DPBH policy/procedure. Performs adult health assessments and identifies both physical and behaviorial health problems with appropriate referrals. Monitors all aspects of patient care. Instructs patients and families on topics such as Sexual Transmitted Disease (STD) prevention, pill protocol, and problems, how to initiate and maintain birth control methods, and problem reporting. Travel 50% of the time for job duties with or without accommodations.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nevada and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness or intellectual disabilities; OR one year as a Psychiatric Nurse I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
