The Position
Park Interpreters plan, organize, provide and supervise a variety of interpretive facilities, services and activities and assist in the operation and maintenance of an assigned State park.
This position is located at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park located in downtown Las Vegas. The primary park activities include site seeing, photography, interpretive tours of historic structures, picnicking and artifact viewing in the Visitor Center. The site has numerous historical interpretive opportunities based on early settlement of the Las Vegas Valley. Candidates work under direct supervision of the Park Supervisor in all aspects of park operations including visitor services, interpretation, custodial services, building and grounds maintenance, fee collection, gift store operations, museum operations and volunteer management. This position is responsible for developing, preparing and implementing interpretive programs onsite and offsite as well as managing and curating historic items and structures at a historic site. This position is responsible for community outreach and educational programs to local schools and community groups. The position is responsible for designing and creating brochures, interpretive signage, exhibits, audiovisual programs, and online media presence. The position recruits, trains and supervises park volunteers and subordinate seasonal staff. The position is responsible for submitting weekly fee/gift shop deposits, monthly reports, processing group reservations, scheduling programs and tours, providing medical assistance, answering questions on local area attractions, informing the public of park rules and regulations and ensuring compliance with park rules and procedures. The position requires the use of general office equipment, four wheel drive vehicles, light maintenance equipment and basic skills in Microsoft Word and Excel. Park Interpreters are required to work variable hours and shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays; be available to work special events and respond to callouts or emergencies. Some statewide travel may be required. Park Housing is not available at this location.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major or minor in park management, outdoor recreation management, history/folklore, education, ecology, forestry, biology, agriculture, natural or environmental sciences, horticulture, wildlife management, museum management, business or public administration or related field and one year of professional park experience which included developing, managing and presenting interpretive and/or educational activities; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this class have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this class must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    Positions require work on evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
    This position has an up to 25% travel requirement.
