The Position
Correctional Sergeants and Lieutenants have charge of an assigned watch or major area in a State correctional institution/facility and supervise subordinate officers to ensure the safe custody,discipline and welfare of inmates.
For this position, the starting salary for newly hired State employees will be at the beginning of the pay range listed above. Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
All applicants will be set up for the Sergeant examination unless an email is sent to bsorom@doc.nv.gov requesting to have your previous score transferred to this announcement. All requests must be received before October 16, 2015. You must submit an application to this announcement in order to have a score transferred. If claiming veteran status you must attach a copy of your DD214 to your application for this announcement. The DD214 must be attached to your application to be considered. If claiming disabled veteran status you must attach all supporting documentation from the VA stating disabled veteran status. Veterans Status documentation must be attached to your application to be considered. You must update your work history to list all current positions. All your information must be accurate when you submit the application. Supplemental information will not be accepted after the announcement closes. Per NAC 284.313 (2), it is the responsibility of the applicant to apply for any recruitment for which he is interested. You must apply when the announcement is open, no accommodations will be made for issues that prevent you from applying before October 15, 2015.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    One year of work experience as a Senior Correctional Officer in Nevada State service; OR three years of experience as a journey level Correctional Officer in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including the physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.
    Equivalency statement-1 year Correctional Officer, plus BA in Criminal Justice or related field OR 2 years Correctional Officer, plus AA degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).
CORRECTIONAL SERGEANT (13.311) Written Exam
The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.
