The Position
Mental Health Technicians supplement the work of mental health professionals, health specialists, and nursing staff in providing direct client care for clients in a mental health facility.

Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. This position supports SOUTHERN NEVADA ADULT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES (SNAMHS) and is assigned to the Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital located at 1650 Community College Drive in Las Vegas. Our Agency's mission is to help adults with mental illness improve their quality of life. Through a team approach, we provide innovative inpatient and outpatient mental health services for the Southern Nevada community. Some of the valuable services we provide include Psychiatric Emergency Services, Inpatient Services, Mobile Crises, Outpatient Counseling, Service Coordination, Intensive Service Coordination and Medication Clinic. Inpatient services are provided through the new Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital. Outpatient services are provided through mental health clinics located throughout the community. We are accredited by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). SNAMHS is an exciting place to work with emphasis on utilizing the recovery model, developing innovative programs, increasing consumer and family involvement, educating the public through a variety of activities, and implementing a best practices clinical program. Incumbents provide professional, positive, and therapeutic direct patient care to mentally ill adult clients under immediate and direct supervision. Incumbents receive training in all duties assigned. Will work directly with a team of clinicians, psychiatric nurses, and other mental health professionals at a secure psychiatric health care facility serving adults.
This position will provide direct consumer care to psychiatric patients, including but not limited to: acting as the primary unit therapist for a select group of five to seven consumers, take vital signs as assigned, observe and document findings in the electronic record system, plan and implement daily care for assigned patients, implement therapeutic interventions with clients, facilitate or co-facilitate individual or group basic skills training sessions under direct supervision of mental health professionals, and transport clients to and from appointments using state vehicle. As condition for continued employment Mental Health Technicians are required to comply with NRS 433.279 and become a Certified Mental Health Technician III within 2 years from date of hire, through completion of required coursework. This certification is a progression requirement [5 credits from Tech I to Tech II and 5 credits from Tech II to Tech III], but it is also the primary clinical training program for technicians. Once certified, the technician must maintain certification by completing 20 hours of continuing education units every two years following the date on which initial certification was issued. This position requires completion of respirator fit testing, completion of Certification in Conflict Prevention and Response Training and CPR certification.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of experience involving public contact which may have included providing care or guidance for children, elders or others; volunteer work in providing respite to caregivers; or leading youth groups; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    CPR certification is required within six months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    First aid certification is required within six months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    In accordance with NAC 284.437, this series may be used to underfill Mental Health Professional positions when recruitment efforts for clinical positions in rural communities have been unsuccessful.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    Applicants must successfully complete a pre-employment physical and be free of active tuberculosis.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
