The Position
Correctional Officers maintain and supervise offenders in State correctional facilities in a controlled humane environment. This position may be at a Maximum-Security Prison.
For this position, the starting salary for newly hired State employees will be at the beginning of the pay range listed above. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
Sr. Correctional Officers serve as lead workers for subordinate correctional staff by training, assigning and reviewing work of subordinate officers. All applicants will be set up for the Sr. Correctional Officer examination unless an email is sent to bsorom@doc.nv.gov requesting to have your previous score transferred to this announcement. All requests must be received before 09/16/15. If claiming veteran status you must attach a copy of your DD214 to your application for this announcement. It must be attached to your application every time you apply in order to be considered. If claiming disabled veteran status you must attach all supporting documentation from the VA stating disabled veteran status. It must be attached to your application every time you apply in order to be considered. You must update your work history to list all current positions. All your information must be accurate when you submit the application. Supplemental information will not be accepted after the announcement closes. COT experience does not count towards journey level experience.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    One year of journey level experience as a correctional officer in an adult correctional institution which included certification as a peace officer under P.O.S.T. or its equivalent; OR one year of experience as a Correctional Officer in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.
    An Associate's Degree in corrections, criminal justice, or a closely related field may be substituted for six months of the required journey level experience.
    Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including the physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).

The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.
