The Position
Laboratory Assistants perform routine, repetitive, and standardized duties to assist professional staff in scientific research, chemical or microbiological analysis or related activities.
--The University of Nevada, Reno, Laboratory Animal Medicine is recruiting for a full-time Laboratory Assistant 1. Duties include: feeding, watering, observing, and handling animals daily, assisting in treatment of sick animals, cleaning and sanitizing primary animal enclosures, cleaning and sanitizing facility rooms, corridors, storage areas and offices, safely operating and maintaining equipment such ventilated cage racks, glove box isolators, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves, etc., recordkeeping by maintaining animal and facility logs/records, and animal ID cards, assisting research scientists with animal health maintenance procedures, safe and humane transportation of live animals between facilities, the airport, field and vendor lab, euthanizing animals, carcass disposal, and other duties as assigned.
--The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school and six months of general work experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks.
Special Requirements
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
Additional Position Criteria
    This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding.
    This position requires lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
    This position may require working a variable work schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.
    This position requires having a valid driver's license at the time of application and as a condition of continued employment.
    This position requires the ability to follow oral and written instructions, and communicate with others to relay information.
    This position requires general knowledge of basic cleaning procedures applicable to laboratory surfaces and equipment.
