The Position
Dental Assistants assist dentists in the general or specialized treatment of patients in routine, emergency, and clinical research procedures in areas of diagnostic, preventive, restorative, periodontal, endodontic, pedodontic, orthodontic, oral surgery, and prosthodontic dental care.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position provides dental assistance to the Orthodontic department by working in various areas within the Orthodontic Dental Residency. Duties will include working as an Orthodontic dental assistant, providing reception desk coverage, taking dental radiographs, dispensing instruments and materials to faculty, dental resident, dental students and staff as well as working in sterilization when needed. Candidates must possess the ability to assist Orthodontic residents and faculty in the placement and bonding of braces, brackets and other Orthodontic dental appliances. Extensive knowledge of Orthodontic instruments and materials, intermediate knowledge of front office duties, to include excellent communication skills, knowledge of proper diagnostic and preventive dentistry protocols is required. Familiarity with proper dental supply disciplines, the use and storage of dental materials in accordance with manufacturer?s directions is required. Candidates must ensures all dental treatment rooms are in compliance with State, Federal and OSHA guidelines as they pertain to infection control and the sterilization of dental instruments. Candidate must possess basic knowledge of dental software operating systems. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8am to 5pm. EEO/AA/Vet/Disability Employer.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education, successful completion of a recognized one-year dental assistant training program, and one year of experience working with the public collecting and recording information and/or explaining and clarifying basic information; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of clinical experience in a dental practice using four-handed techniques in a wide range of procedures, collecting and recording patient's medical information, exposing, processing, mounting and labeling radiographs, and applying dental sterile techniques and infectious control and exposure procedures; OR one year of experience as a Dental Assistant I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
Skills Required
    All Dental Assistant positions at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) are required to pass: 1) a background investigation; and 2) a sanction check performed through the National Healthcare Data Bank (NHDB).
