The Position
Highway Maintenance Supervisors supervise skilled and semi-skilled personnel engaged in restoring roadway surfaces and restoring or constructing slopes, shoulders, culverts, structures, fixtures and landscaping.
This position is located within District III, Elko. Incumbent is responsible for assisting five Highway Maintenance Supervisor I positions and 1,110 lane miles. The incumbent will assist in scheduling projects and routine activities; coordinate equipment needs, monitor work progress and productivity of five crews; determine material needs; place orders and make arrangements for deliveries to accomplish various betterment projects; respond to emergency call outs; work with Supervisor I's and Maintenance Manager to identify upcoming betterment needs; participate in betterment reviews; assist in preparing and submitting budget estimates; compile a planning chart for the upcoming season; assist in personnel issues; and provide support and guidance in evaluations and disciplinary actions. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience supervising, planning and scheduling the work of a highway maintenance crew engaged in a variety of highway maintenance activities; OR two years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Supervisor I in Nevada State service OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    A Class A commercial driver's license with the appropriate endorsements is required within six months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Special Requirements
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law requires random testing for controlled substances during employment.
    A valid class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

The Examination
HWY MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR II
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

1) Describe your experience documenting: a) work performance of contractors on highway maintenance contracts; b) crew accomplishments; c) operating budgets; d) investigations and resolutions of complaints from the general public; and e) calculations determining staff requirements for personnel.
2) Describe your experience reading and interpreting the following: a) Standard Specifications; b) Open Term Contracts - Invitation to Bid and Bid Tabulations; c) Storm Water Quality Manual; and d) Prohibition and Penalties/Personnel regulations.
3) Describe your experience planning and prioritizing both routine and complex highway maintenance activities.
4) Describe your experience with the following: a) Traffic Incident Management; b) Incident Command System protocol; and c) Working jointly with other agencies during an incident.
5) Describe your experience using road weather forecasts and roadway weather instrumentation devices for effective highway maintenance operations.
6) Describe your experience with the following: a) Interviewing and hiring employees; b) Investigating employee actions/incidents; and c) disciplining employees.
