Wildlife Area Technicians may be assigned to work at a wildlife management area, on a water development
crew or as a regional utility person. Typical duties involve the maintenance of wildlife habitat by operating
light and heavy equipment, controlling water levels in wetland areas, managing vegetation and related activities intended to develop and enhance an environment which will support the State's wildlife species.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
This Wildlife Area Technician III (WAT III) position is the senior member of a two-person Wildlife Water Development ("Guzzler") crew which performs a wide range of necessary guzzler inspection, maintenance, repair and construction activities. The position ensures that all vehicles and equipment used on projects remain in proper operating condition, and receive scheduled maintenance in accordance with manufacturer's operating manuals in consideration of the work environment. The position also ensures equipment is regularly inspected for need of repairs and operated in a safe and responsible manner.
The WAT III provides immediate supervision to the other member of the wildlife water development crew. Both positions may help implement other programs as assigned to achieve Habitat Division objectives. The Water Development Crew regularly travels long distances as required and work in locations that are a significant distance from the duty station; such excursions may require camping out in remote areas for an extended period of time including weekends. The WAT III position must also represent NDOW and interact with people of varied interests, including the many volunteers that assist the crew on guzzler construction and major rebuild projects.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Graduation from high school or equivalent education and five years experience in maintenance, farming or construction, two of which included experience in maintaining lands for wildlife, managing water levels and manipulating water flow, maintaining and/or constructing equipment and facilities, and surveying wildlife by counting and taking inventory of species; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Wildlife Area Technician II in Nevada State service.
Special Notes
Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid Nevada commercial driver's license.
Education above the high school level in wildlife management, biology or closely related field may be substituted for the qualifying experience.
Special Requirements
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
Positions in this series are required to obtain and maintain a valid Nevada commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement and air brake certification within six months of appointment.
