DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series.

This recruitment is to fill vacancies for Parole & Probation in Las Vegas and, rural vacancies for Nevada Highway Patrol, and Carson City vacancies for Capitol Police. You will be tested in Las Vegas or Carson City for the physical agility and written examination so please indicate your preferred test location in your application.Las Vegas test dates will be on 8/7, 8/14, 8/28, 9/18, and 10/2 Carson City test dates will be on 8/21,9/11, 10/9, and 11/13 . Also, test dates are subject to change (rain for example). Applicants who pass both examinations will be interviewed in August or September time-frame. You MUST bring a completed background packet to your job interview (not the physical or written exam). Failure to bring the completed background packet will delay the processing of your background investigation. Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of military service or public contact experience which included problem solving and applying policies to specific situations; OR Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, social work, fire science, or related field and one year of experience as described above; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, public administration, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

Applicant must meet current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.

Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment.

Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy.

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. |

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. |

The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of any offense involving the illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances. |

The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime. |

The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence. |

The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them. |
