The Position
Prison Milker milks cows, cleans milking and milk handling equipment, oversees and instructs inmates; and does related work as required at a prison dairy.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Under general supervision of the Prison Industries Supervisor or Dairy Supervisor, milk cows, clean milking and milk handling equipment, oversee and instruct inmates; and does related work as required at a prison dairy.
Milk cows twice daily using mechanical milking equipment to collect milk for the prison dairy processing plant; oversee and instruct inmates in milking procedures and animal care in accordance with the prison industries work program.
Identify and treat common health problems such as mastitis in the milking string; treat illness or inflammation with salves and antibiotics and administer routine vaccinations to maintain health and production of the dairy herd; remove medicated cows from the production line to prevent medication from entering the milk tank in accordance with State and federal health regulations.
Sanitize milking equipment by using accepted methods and chemicals to flush and soak milking machines, tanks and lines; repair milking equipment by repairing leaks in the lines, replacing gaskets, etc.
Assist in the breeding program by detecting heat signs, conducting pregnancy tests and tracking pregnancies so the cow can be removed from the milk line at the appropriate time; assist with cow birthing.
Other duties may include related chores common to the operation of a dairy and crop farm such as feeding livestock, cleaning corrals, operating equipment and repairing buildings, fixtures, fences and equipment.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
One year of experience milking cows on a milk production line using mechanized milking equipment.
Special Requirements
A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
