The Position
Museum Directors are responsible for the overall leadership, operation, planning, and management of a State museum in conformance with professionally accepted museum practices and standards for the management of collections held in the public trust and interpretation of those collections through research, exhibitions, education, and public programs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Museum Directors are responsible for the overall leadership, operation, planning, and management of a State museum in conformance with professionally accepted museum practices and standards. Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City is one of seven museums in the Nevada Division of Museums and History, a part of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. Established in 1985 the museum focuses on the role the railroad played in the development of the Hoover Dam, Boulder City and southern Nevada. The museum director supervises the work of two staff and about 60 volunteers. The primary public program is an on-train experience in historic railroad cars traveling along 4.5 miles of the former Boulder Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. In addition to weekend train operations several seasonal and special trains are offered. The operation, maintenance, and management of railroad operations and equipment per C.F.R. Title 49, parts 200-299 is crucial. The museum director provides leadership to the staff and volunteers, sets short and long term priorities to advance the mission and vision of the museum within the goals established by the Division. The museum director is expected to be available to work some weekends and holidays. This position has a 25% travel requirement. NOTE: Per NV State Legislature, State of Nevada Classified employees are subject to a mandatory unpaid furlough requirement of 48 hours per year (part-time prorated) through June 30, 2015.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in museum studies, public history, anthropology, history, art, or related field and three years of progressively responsible professional experience in a museum setting which included supervision of volunteers or staff and working with the public in a large program area; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
    Willing to work a flexible schedule which may include some weekends and holidays in support of the program?
Additional Position Criteria
    Must have experience with the operations or management of a tourist railroad, heritage railroad, or other general railroad operating experience.

Describe your experience with developing and managing budgets, with special emphasis on experience with budgets that include multiple funding sources. Please detail the extent and where you received such experience.
4) Describe your experience in working with outside non-profit organizations that provide support to museums, both financially and with manpower (volunteers). Please describe the extent of such experience.
