The Position
Correctional Sergeants and Lieutenants have charge of an assigned watch or major area in a State correctional institution/facility and supervise subordinate officers to ensure the safe custody,discipline and welfare of inmates.
Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives.
As a member of the Juvenile Justice Administration team the Youth Correctional Lieutenant will direct the 24-hour safety and security of the Summit View Youth Correctional Center (SVYCC), a 48-bed secure facility for male youth age 14 to 18 located in North Las Vegas, NV. Responsibilities include: direct supervision of a team of Youth Correctional Officers; establishing facility security and safety protocols and policies; direct security functions and activities relating to the care and wellbeing of the youth which may include verbal commands and physical restraint of youth; participate on youth rehabilitation treatment teams; resolves and prevent youth conflicts; respond to emergencies, escapes, and disturbances; availability to respond to after-hours emergencies; conduct searches for contraband; monitor buildings, perimeters, and other areas for security and safety. The Nevada DIVISION OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES (DCFS), together in partnership with families, communities and other governmental agencies provides support and services to assist Nevada's children and families in reaching their full human potential. DCFS is an extremely complex organization with incredibly dedicated and professional staff committed to serving Nevada's youth and families! This is a full time position with a variable work agreement with overtime after 40 hours per week. The State of Nevada and DCFS offer an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental and vision insurance, participation in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), accrual of 15 days of annual and 15 days of sick leave, 11 paid holidays and no city, county, state or social security tax! DCFS also encourages education by providing on-going trainings and paid release time for staff to obtain CEU's. Some positions may also be eligible for an additional 5% Shift Differential pay.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    One year of work experience as a Correctional Sergeant in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).
CORRECTIONAL LIEUTENANT (13.310) Training and Experience Exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
1) Describe your experience, including number of years, as a correctional sergeant.
2) Please describe your experience in the following: a) as an Acting Lieutenant which included the awarding of a special salary adjustment (+5%) or with certification of the appointing authority; and/or b) experience as a Correctional Lieutenant including where and how long.
3) Describe your experience working at various correctional facilities for more than six (6) months (not including the current facility you work at).
4) Describe/list your experience as an in-service training instructor through the last calendar year including classroom hours.
5) Describe your experience in formal investigations which required the submission of a final report of findings.
6) Describe/list your experience as an Incident Commander that involved escape, major assault, or other significant disruptions of institutional operations that included the submission of a report summarizing the incident to the institution and/or department administrators.
7) List any job-related, non-mandatory training or college coursework taken within the last three years. Please also indicate if you have an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
