The Position
Therapeutic Recreation Specialists perform initial and periodic assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to assist individuals in correctional institutions, rehabilitation programs, long-term care facilities, residential facilities, mental health facilities and facilities for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to improve their mental and physical health and/or social functioning.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
This recruitment is for a vacancy at Desert Regional Center (DRC) in Las Vegas. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist II institutes therapeutic recreation programs and plans to support individuals residing on the Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) campus of DRC. The incumbent will establish recreation protocols to prepare individuals for transition into the community. This will include in- home, on campus, and off campus opportunities. The incumbent will, in conjunction with the treatment team, determine the type of therapeutic recreation plans needed for specific individuals. The incumbent will include goals, objectives, approaches and forms of documentation as part of the written plan. Consultation will be provided to home staff and supervisors regularly to ensure plans are understood. The incumbent will establish community connections to ensure opportunities for individuals to engage in recreation programs offered in the local community. This position requires working some weekends, evenings and holidays.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or specialty area such as art, dance, music or physical education and one year of full-time professional experience coordinating and providing recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, or community-based organization; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation (NCTR) and one year of full-time experience described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
The Examination
