The Position
Safety Supervisors and Managers work in the Division of Industrial Relations programs mandated by the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Act. (OSHA)
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
This position is with the Nevada Division of Industrial Relations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration in Henderson. Supervisory duties include assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, and initiating disciplinary action as required. Incumbents supervise the work of subordinate employees who conduct unannounced inspections of worksites covered by the Nevada OSHA Act, conduct accident and complaint investigations, investigate complaints of discrimination based on protected safety-related activities; review and approve inspection and investigation reports and proposed citations and penalties submitted by subordinates; and participate in a high volume of informal and formal hearings regarding citations and penalties and serve as a lead on high-profile accident investigations. Incumbents may be required to use personal vehicle to conduct State business. Working shifts other than 8:00am to 5:00pm may be required, to include weekends. NOTE: Per NV State Legislature, State of Nevada Classified employees are subject to a mandatory unpaid furlough requirement of 48 hours per year (part-time prorated) through June 30, 2015.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in occupational safety and health, safety engineering, or related field and three years of experience which included primary responsibility in four of the following areas in construction and/or general industry: hazard identification, hazard evaluation in relation to existing standards, hazard control design, hazard controls verification, safety/health program design, and safety/health program evaluation; OR Bachelor's degree in biological or physical sciences, or engineering, and five years of experience as described above; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and seven years of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience comparable to a Safety Specialist, Enforcement in Nevada State service.
Special Notes
    Incumbents may be required to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays in addition to their normal work schedules.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
The Examination
SAFETY SUPERVISOR, ENFORCEMENT-DIR (11.520) Training and Experience Exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

2) Describe your experience, including the number of years, as a director or manager of a Safety Regulatory Agency or in charge of a Safety and Health program.
3) Describe your experience, including the number of years, as a journey level Safety Inspector in the private sector.
4) Describe your experience, including the number of years, as a supervisor or lead person in a safety regulatory agency.
5) Describe your experience, including the number of years, as a supervisor or lead person in a safety program.
