The Position
Therapeutic Recreation Specialists perform initial and periodic assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to assist individuals in correctional institutions, rehabilitation programs, long-term care facilities, residential facilities, mental health facilities and facilities for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to improve their mental and physical health and/or social functioning.
Desert Willow Treatment Center is a 58 bed child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient hospital serving severely emotionally disturbed youth. Incumbent will provide direct care services to patients on the acute and residential units. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist I must be able to evaluate patient needs by performing assessments; observe patients during activities; modify activities to accommodate needs; record special problems, incidents, achievements, and developments; and plan, organize, and schedule special events/outings. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist I participates in weekly multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and works in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to rehabilitate patients with mental health issues. This position provides comprehensive recreational services by evaluating individual needs and strengths, develops a therapeutic treatment plan tailored to the patient's specific needs, documents prescribed therapeutic activities (i.e., social skills groups, creative arts, physical fitness, leisure education, team sports/sports skills, life skills, communications skills, community access, and stress management). All services must be in compliance with the Joint Commission, Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance, Legislative Counsel Bureau, and Medicaid/Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services standards. The incumbent will follow medical and health care practices that adhere to the values and principles of the Systems of Care.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or specialty area, such as art, dance, music or physical education and one year of full-time technical experience in recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, or community-based organization; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation (NCTR); OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    Certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation as required by the agency for accreditation by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals or other accrediting body is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Must be available to work evenings, weekends and some holidays.
