JOB INFORMATION
Work Type: Permanent, full time vacancies as they may occur
Statewide.
DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series.
This recruitment is specific for Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) and Parole & Probation (P&P) rural vacancies. Vacancies exist in the rural part of the state along the Interstate 80, Highway 50, and Highway 95 corridors. We will be testing on May 21 in Elko at 7am. Please Note: This recruitment may close at any time depending on the number of applications received.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of military service or public contact experience which included problem solving and applying policies to specific situations; OR Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, social work, fire science, or related field and one year of experience as described above; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, public administration, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
Applicant must meet current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment.
Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy.
Special Requirements
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
This position is subject to call-out or call-back.
A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
Statewide travel is required.
Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a felony in this State or of any offense, which would be a felony if committed in this state.
The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of any offense involving the illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances.
The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime.
The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence.
The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).

The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.
