The Position
Accounting Assistants perform clerical accounting work in the maintenance of accounts and accounting records for State agencies.
-- The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for an Accounting Assistant 1 in the Controller's Office. The main purpose of this position is to receive, audit, and post all deposits received in the cashier's office pertaining to regular and student accounts receivable. Duties include working the front counter and providing customer service to students, employees, and the public; receiving and posting routine payments into the financial accounting system; verifying completeness of documentation; researching and retrieving payment information; balancing the assigned cash drawer; and answering departmental phones.
--The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. During registration periods hours may vary; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. Pursuant to Nevada Legislature, State of Nevada Classified employees are subject to a mandatory unpaid furlough requirement of six days (part-time prorated) per fiscal year effective July 1, 2013. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent and one year of clerical experience, six months of which included accounts payable and/or accounts receivable responsibility; and the use of computer spreadsheets and a calculator by touch; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education supplemented by successful completion of a one-semester college course in bookkeeping or one year of high school bookkeeping and six months of clerical experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks.
Special Requirements
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
Additional Position Criteria
    This position requires prior experience with cashiering and/or money handling in a business setting.
    This position requires experience providing excellent customer service.
    This position requires the ability to perform basic math calculations.
    This position requires working varied hours periodically during registration periods.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).
CLERICAL SUPPORT EXAM
The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.
