The Position
Correctional Officers maintain and supervise offenders in State correctional facilities in a controlled humane environment. This position may be at a Maximum-Security Prison.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
Positions allocated to this class, under general supervision, perform the full range of duties described in the series concept. In addition, Senior Correctional Officers serve as lead- workers for lower level correctional staff by assigning and reviewing work and by providing on-the-job training. Senior Correctional Officers assist lower level personnel in verifying duty logs at the end of the shift, review misconduct reports submitted by lower level personnel for completeness and accuracy before submittal to higher level officers and assist the Sergeant in supervising the work of correctional staff in the safe custody, discipline and welfare of inmates on an assigned shift. Correctional Officer Trainee experience does not count toward journey level. Only apply if wanting/willing to work and move to Ely, Nevada. No other SR position from other facilities will be filled from this recruitment.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    One year of journey level experience as a correctional officer in an adult correctional institution which included certification as a peace officer under P.O.S.T. or its equivalent; OR one year of experience as a Correctional Officer in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.
    An Associate's Degree in corrections, criminal justice, or a closely related field may be substituted for six months of the required journey level experience.
    Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including the physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).

The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.
