The Position
Group Supervisors perform duties involving the education, employment, training, treatment, care and custody of juvenile offenders residing within a State Youth Training Center; maintain comprehensive records of assigned youths' program activities; and provide individual guidance pursuant to State or federal laws and regulations.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. Supervise the activities of youths within assigned unit; directly observe work habits, social behavior, and attitude to ensure conduct meets established rules and regulations of the institution; provide assistance and direction to youths in the performance of assignments, acceptable behavior, proper dress and personal hygiene; participate as a member of a treatment team to implement a treatment plan; document progress or problems in youths' development.
The Nevada DIVISION OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES (DCFS), together in genuine partnership with families, communities and other governmental agencies, provides support and services to assist Nevada's children and families in reaching their full human potential. DCFS recognizes that Nevada's families are our future and children, youth and families thrive when they live in safe permanent settings, experience a sense of sustainable emotional and physical wellbeing, and receive support to consistently make positive choices for family and the common good. DCFS utilizes a family centered model in delivering services that is focused on engaging children, families and the family team, and encouraging their participation in decisions. DCFS programs include child protective and welfare service delivery in rural Nevada and oversight of urban county-operated child protective and welfare services, children's mental/behavioral health treatment and residential services (outpatient and inpatient acute) in urban Nevada, and statewide juvenile justice services including state-operated youth training centers and youth parole. DCFS is an extremely complex organization with incredibly dedicated and professional staff that are committed to the Nevada children and families we serve!

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of progressively responsible experience working with youth in a custodial, therapeutic, educational or correctional setting with responsibility for performing vocational assessments, making oral presentations during group sessions and treatment team meetings, and providing vocational and life skills training to juvenile offenders; OR one year as a Group Supervisor III in Nevada State service; OR a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, social work, criminal justice, education or related field and two years of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Incumbents must obtain and maintain current first aid certification as a condition of continuing employment.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Per NAC 284.317, applicants must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).
GROUP SUPERVISOR 4 (12.535) Training and Experience Exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
1) Describe your experience, including number of years, planning, developing, or implementing activities and events in one or all of the following juvenile correctional, education, or social setting environment: a) Worked in an educational/social environment; b) Worked in a juvenile corrections environment; c) Worked in a juvenile corrections environment with a substantial recreational and educational component environment for four of the last five years.
2) Describe your experience, including number of years, supervising and coordinating staff assignments for the following correctional, educational, or professional staff: a) Supervised either a corrections, educational and/or professional staff; b) supervised corrections staff in the last five years; c) Supervised a combination of corrections and professional staff in the last five years. Be sure to include titles and number of staff supervised and that this information corresponds with documentation in your application.
3) Describe your experience, including number of years, of your involvement with evaluating programs and/or the performance of subordinate workers: a) completed performance evaluations for subordinate staff; b) completed performance evaluations of staff in a corrections or educational environment; c) formal program evaluations in the form of quality improvement for a minimum of two years. Be sure to detail your experience.
4) Describe your experience initiating and implementing policies and procedures, or other innovations to the operations of an institution that involves security, safety and custody: a) policy had minor impact on the institution (e.g., internal processes/procedures); b) policies impacted a segment or portion of an institution in the areas of safety, security or custody (e.g., cottage, unit, or section); c) policies impacted an institution's security and custody procedures as a whole. Be sure to detail your experience.
5) Please list all current certifications you hold or associations of which you are a member that are related to this position. You must attach copies of all current certificates and memberships to receive credit for your response.
6) Describe your level of education related to this position as either a) high school diploma with training in criminal justice or sociology, b) Associates degree in criminal justice, psychology or secondary education, or c) Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, or secondary education. Make sure your description is supported by documentation in your application.
