The Position
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. This is a permanent, full time, long term substitute teaching position. The subject initially taught will be assigned by the principal and will last up to a year. After the first year, the subject taught will be in alignment with your endorsement and/or the needs of the school. The Academic Teacher's position counsels, evaluates, and instructs adjudicated delinquent juveniles who are assigned to the Nevada Youth Training Center (NYTC). As a state-employee/academic teacher, each year you will accumulate three weeks annual leave, three weeks sick leave, and enjoy all of the designated state holidays. In addition to time off, you will participate in our Public Employees Retirement Plan and benefits package. NYTC is a year-round institution so you will be able to take desired leave as it fits your schedule. Elko is located in Northern Nevada and provides an abundance of outdoor and recreation opportunities. This position develops a curriculum and individualized educational programs and monitors students' progress. This position counsels students and prepares initial class schedule recommendations on the basis of academic and psychological test results, records, transcripts, students' educational and career goals, and the availability of academic and vocational programs at the facility in order to assist students to achieve their educational, vocational, social, and personal goals. This position accounts for students and ensures they remain in custody by observing students during school functions and class changes by checking daily attendance and immediately reporting any deviations from a regular control roster, and monitoring behaviors during class to ensure students comply with classroom behavior and safety policies and to detect volatile situations before they evolve into an altercation.
