Foresters perform professional duties in forestry, natural resource management and conservation, fire prevention and suppression, and related areas.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position will, through collaboration and cooperative efforts, update existing and create new community risk assessments; assist communities in the development of community fire plans for the purpose of wildland fire protection; identify local wildland fire protection strategies to include public education, hazard fuels mitigation and protection capacity; plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate fuels management projects with local, state and federal agencies and private individuals in at-risk communities on state and private lands identified in the statewide risk assessment; and provide prevention and public education opportunities in communities throughout the region. This position will make landowner contacts, formulate fuel project plans, walk sites for Historic Preservation and Threatened and Endangered species clearances, obtaining all necessary landowner waivers and permits/variances, write project implementation plans to include prescribed burn plans when appropriate, and be present on project sites regularly to check progress and provide technical assistance. Project activities will require extensive travel throughout the region, the ability to work independently, and may involve work in arduous terrain. Positions may be required to provide technical training on accepted fuels reduction techniques and projects for Great Basin ecotypes to professional audiences and the general public. The position is federally funded and is subject to annual grant renewal.
Incumbent must pass the moderate pack test walking two (2) miles with a twenty-five (25) pound pack within thirty (30) minutes or less.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in forestry or closely related natural resources field and one year of professional natural resource experience in areas such as forest health, forest insect and disease identification and treatment, and vegetation management at a level comparable to Forester I, Nursery Specialist I or Conservation Crew Supervisor III, or one year of firefighting experience at a level comparable to Firefighter II in Nevada State service; OR one year of experience as a Forester I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |
