Highway Maintenance Workers are certified by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to operate a variety of complex or specialized highway maintenance and construction equipment in order to restore and maintain the integrity of roadway surfaces; maintain roadside slopes, shoulders, culverts and ditches to restore drainage and prevent erosion; and repair or replace related roadway appurtenances such as guardrails, markers, guide posts and fences.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
This position is located in District III, Winnemucca. The position is part of a 6 person crew that performs road maintenance, winter operations, betterments, and emergency incident response. This crew covers 248 lane miles. Under the general supervision of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor I, incumbent functions as the assistant supervisor or lead person of a roadway or specialty crew on a regular, reocurring basis and assumes all supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor. Graduation from high school or the equivalent and one year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

In order to meet the needs of specialized disciplines within the highway maintenance field, certified equipment proficiency or specialized skills may be required for Highway Maintenance Worker III's and IV's and will be identified at the time of recruitment. |

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position may be required to submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law requires random testing for controlled substances during employment. |

A valid Class A commercial driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment |

A letter of certification in the operation of complex or specialized highway maintenance or construction equipment from a current or previous employer is required to be attached to your application at the time of submittal. Failure to attach this letter may result in the denial of your application. |

Certification must be in the form of a letter from a current or previous employer and must include dates, hours, and types of equipment used. This letter must be presented on official business letterhead and be signed by the appointing authority. |
