Grounds Maintenance Workers perform landscape, garden and greenhouse duties such as planting, pruning, mowing, trimming, watering, fertilizing, weeding and snow and ice prevention and removal; and operate hand and power tools, power mowers, tractor mowers, trenching devices, forklifts and hoists.
--The University of Nevada, Reno, is recruiting for a full-time Grounds Maintenance Worker 5 (Irrigation) for the Grounds Services Department. Duties include: prepare designs for new irrigation systems or modifications to existing irrigation systems; calculate flow rates, determine components needed for optimum coverage, prepare estimates for amount and cost of material needed, and oversee and participate in project implementation; perform or oversee the more technical repairs to irrigation systems including repairs to controllers, remote valves, pumps and vacuum breakers; determine when irrigation system components should be repaired or replaced, what types of components and materials are best suited for the job and when a project requires the services of an outside contractor.
--The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm; this schedule is subject to change based on organizational needs. This position is designated as Essential Personnel. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours. Pursuant to Nevada Legislature, State of Nevada Classified employees are subject to a mandatory unpaid furlough requirement of six days (part-time prorated) per fiscal year effective July 1, 2013. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Three years of grounds maintenance experience, one year of which was installing, maintaining and repairing irrigation systems and related equipment; OR one year of experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker IV in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks. |

This position is requires occasionally operating equipment for excavating, trenching, snow removal and trash/recycle pickup. |

This position requires hands on experience installing, maintaining, and repairing large scale commercial irrigation systems. |

This position requires experience programming irrigation controller clocks, calculating flow rates, and determining compatible components. |

This position requires hands on experience installing drip irrigation systems (example: filter, pressure reducer, and backflow). |

This position requires experience working independently to maintain and repair commercial irrigation systems. |

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience.
