Fish Hatchery Supervisors manage the operations and maintenance of an assigned hatchery or fish rearing station, and plan, budget and perform maintenance activities in order to provide for an efficient operation and preserve wildlife resources.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
This position manages the operations and maintenance of a cold water fish hatchery; supervises a four person crew; develops work schedules; participates in the development of the stocking plan; implements the stocking plan; manages a station brood stock program; responsible for station fish health monitoring and treatment; conducts station operations consistent with agency and state purchasing and contracting policy and procedures; and is responsible for station security and public affairs. The successful candidate will be required to reside in housing at the Gallagher Fish Hatchery provided by the Department of Wildlife. A deduction for the current rent amount of $50 is taken from the employee's paycheck every two weeks. A refundable $500 cleaning/damage deposit will be required within 30 days after date of hire.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, wildlife management, fishery or related field and three years of technical experience in wildlife management such as establishing and maintaining quality wildlife habitat to meet the needs of a variety of wildlife species; fish hatchery work that included caring for fish, fish eggs and transplanting fish; operating equipment to maintain suitable habitats of wildlife; and providing for security of wildlife management areas. One year of the above experience must have been in a leadworker capacity; OR graduation from
high school or equivalent education and five years of technical experience in wildlife management such as establishing and maintaining quality wildlife habitat to meet the needs of a variety of wildlife species; fish hatchery work that included caring for fish, fish eggs and transplanting fish One year of the above experience must have been in a leadworker capacity; OR an equivalent combination of education andexperience operating equipment to maintain suitable habitats of wildlife; and providing for security of wildlife management areas. One year of the above experience must have been in a leadworker capacity; OR one year of experience working as a Fish Hatchery Supervisor I or two years of experience as a Fish Hatchery Technician III in Nevada State service.
Special Notes
Education above the high school level in wildlife management, biology or closely related field may be substituted for the qualifying experience on the basis of 30 semester credits being equal to six months of experience for both levels in the series.
Special Requirements
Positions in this series are required to obtain and maintain a valid Nevada commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement and air brake certification.
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
Incumbents in this series are required to reside in Department housing at the hatchery that is provided by the Department of Wildlife.
All positions in this series are required to respond to emergency situations which may occur during non working hours.
