The Position
Museum Directors are responsible for the overall leadership, operation, planning, and management of a State museum in conformance with professionally accepted museum practices and standards for the management of collections held in the public trust and interpretation of those collections through research, exhibitions, education, and public programs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Museum Directors function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City is one of seven museums in the Nevada Division of Museums and History, an agency within the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. The museum was established in 1985 and focuses on the role the railroad played in the development of the Hoover Dam, Boulder City and southern Nevada. The museum director supervises the work of two staff and several dozen volunteers. The primary public program is delivered via an on-train experience in historic railroad cars along 4.5 miles of the former Boulder Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. In addition to weekend train operations several seasonal and special trains are offered. An open-air public pavilion contains several locomotives and railroad cars. The museum director provides leadership to the staff and volunteers, sets short and long term priorities to advance the mission and vision of the museum within the goals established by the Division. The museum director is expected to be available to work some weekends and holidays. NOTE: Per NV State Legislature, State of Nevada Classified employees are subject to a mandatory unpaid furlough requirement of 48 hours per year (part-time prorated) through June 30, 2015.
