Veterans Service Officers advise and advocate for veterans and individuals currently serving in the United States armed forces who are State residents, their spouses, widows, widowers, children, dependents, estate and personal representatives; prepare, submit and present claims and appeals for denied benefits including adjusted compensation, hospitalization, insurance, pension, disability compensation, vocational training, education or rehabilitation; provide assistance and advice to resolve problems and answer questions relating to available benefits under federal and State laws.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Veterans Services Representatives advise and advocate for veterans and individuals currently serving in the United States armed forces who are State residents, their spouses, widows, widowers, children, dependents, estate and personal representatives. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. This position is responsible for researching federal statutes, laws, and regulations pertaining to benefits and claims by military veterans and dependents; interviewing veterans or dependents to prepare for filing claims; review of veterans medical records to obtain evidential support for claims; compiling information from various medical sources; preparing and filing veterans claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA); provides service as veterans advocate at varying levels of claims and appeals procedures with the DVA; represents veterans at DVA boards and hearings; performing out-reach to inform and assist veterans and the community in obtaining benefits; maintains and protects client confidentiality of medical records; and possess knowledge of the Veterans Administration medical and health system.

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in general studies, social science, English or related field and three years of experience which included
interviewing clients to elicit and impart information; researching and locating information from a variety of sources; writing narrative reports and summaries; interpreting and applying rules and regulations; and evaluating complex information and making determinations; OR an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in general studies or related area and two years of experience as described above in a program directly related to providing Veterans services; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

This position requires a pre-employment background investigation as a condition of employment. |

A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. |

This position requires case management experience interviewing veterans to determine benefits, processing veteran's claims, and knowledge of the Veterans Administration medical and health system to include medical terminology. |

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process. |

1) Applicant must possess VA accreditation from a national/state veteran service organization or be able to be accredited within six months of employment from the Nevada Department of Veterans Services as a condition of continuing employment. Can you meet this requirement?
