The Position
Historic Preservation Specialists perform professional cultural resource management activities in the form of statewide historic preservation efforts to ensure compliance with State and/or federal programs, laws, rules and regulations. This includes cooperating with other agencies and the public in conducting a comprehensive statewide survey of cultural resources and maintaining a paper, electronic, and/or GIS inventory of such properties; identifying and nominating eligible resources to the National and State Registers of Historic Places or recognizing resources by erecting State Historic Markers; preparing and implementing a comprehensive statewide historic preservation plan; assisting in the administration of the federal historic preservation assistance program within the State; advising and assisting as appropriate, federal and State agencies and local governments in carrying out their historic preservation responsibilities; cooperating with federal agencies, local governments and the public to ensure that cultural resources are taken into consideration at all levels of planning and development; providing public information, education, training and technical assistance relating to Federal and State Historic Preservation Programs; cooperating with local governments in the development of local historic preservation programs, and assisting local governments in becoming Certified Local Governments (CLGs); providing technical advice to the State of Nevada's Commission for Cultural Centers and Historic Preservation (CCCHP); managing the statutorily-mandated Nevada Site Stewardship Program; administration of the Comstock Historic District for the State as per the requirements of NRS 384; management of the Comstock History Center in Virginia City; administration of Nevada's Native American burial protection legislation.
This position is located in the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), Carson City. The incumbent will work independently to coordinate identification, evaluation, and nomination of eligible resources to the State Register and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP); prepare, review, and edit nominations to the National Register submitted by federal, state, tribal, local, or private agencies and individuals to ensure compliance with State and National Register standards and guidelines; facilitate delivery of completed nominations to State Board of Museums and History for review; assist in forwarding successful nominations to appropriate state and federal agencies. In addition, the incumbent will prepare press releases for historic properties as they are listed in the NRHP; prepare and update the SHPO National Register guidelines, assist members of the public and others with questions about the State and National Registers; design and deliver training (web-based and/or face-to-face) regarding the State and National Register designation processes; maintain and update the NRHP lists in hardcopy as well as on the internet and in the SHPO's GIS system. The incumbent will disseminate technical information on the Historic Preservation Tax Incentive program; review Tax Act applications for substantive and technical content to ensure compliance with federal standards; approve applications and recommend revisions or denials; coordinate review between Tax Act applicants. And finally, the incumbent will certify architectural reports and work resulting from historic preservation grants to ensure they meet applicable federal standards. Some travel (approximately 15% of time) is required. NOTE: Per NV State Legislature, State of Nevada Classified employees are subject to a mandatory unpaid furlough requirement of 48 hours per year through June 30, 2015

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduate degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field, and coursework in American architectural history, and one year of experience performing professional historic preservation work related to architectural history; OR Bachelor's degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation or closely related field, plus three years full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization, museum, or related institution; or equivalent, substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in American architectural history.
Additional Position Criteria
    State and/or National Register of Historic Places nominations
    Performing archival and historical research using primary and secondary documentary sources

2) Describe your experience in providing recommendations for rehabilitation of historic structures in accordance with federal standards.
