The Position
Digital Telecommunications Specialist's perform specialized electronic technician work involving the specification, fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and modification of both hardware and network software for telecommunications systems, Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) in a geographical area or on a statewide basis for one or more State agencies.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
Under the general direction of the Director of Delivery and Telecommunication Services, the incumbent is responsible for the management and coordination of the acquisition, configuration, installation, maintenance and administration of the voice communication networks for the University. The primary focus of this position will be to ensure the university's Nortel and Cisco PBX (Private Branch Exchange) are operating properly and maintenance is being conducted in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. In addition, the incumbent will coordinate and supervise the daily work activities related to the mission of telecommunications. As a working supervisor the incumbent will be responsible for the day to day work assignment, work order monitoring, employee training, process development, customer service, and procedure implementation for the two subordinate employees within the work order management system. Per the Nevada State Legislature, classified employees are subject to six (6) mandatory unpaid furlough days through 6/30/14. **UNLV is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity educator and employer committed to excellence through diversity.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics technology or closely related field and three years of increasingly responsible experience in data communications networks involving the fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and modification of hardware and software; OR an Associate's degree in electronics or closely related field and four years of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Digital Telecommunications Specialist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks.
Skills Required
    Preference will be given to candidates who have worked as an on-site technician for a large facility similar to UNLV.
    Experience working with Cisco and Avaya PBX's is also preferred.
    Candidates must describe in detail their experience in the design and use of electronic work flow, ticketing systems, and collaborative tools such as calendars, Sharepoint, Google Sites, Webcampus, ERP systems, etc.
