The Position
Therapeutic Recreation Specialists perform initial and periodic assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to assist individuals in correctional institutions, rehabilitation programs, long-term care facilities, residential facilities, mental health facilities and facilities for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to improve their mental and physical health and/or social functioning.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The position of Therapeutic Recreation Specialist I is located with Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (NNAMHS) in Spark, Nevada. This position provides psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation services in the least restrictive environment for adults with mental illness. We improve quality of life through innovative programs and service delivery systems. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialists provide a full spectrum of recreation services including but not limited to therapeutic gardening, volleyball, ceramics/pottery, golf skills, Nintendo Wii activities, recovery classes, leisure education, fitness awareness and personal development classes. : Per NV State Legislature, State of Nevada Classified employees are subject to a mandatory unpaid furlough requirement of 48 hours per year (part-time prorated) through June 30, 2015.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or specialty area, such as art, dance, music or physical education and one year of full-time technical experience in recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, or community-based organization; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation (NCTR); OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    Certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation as required by the agency for accreditation by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals or other accrediting body is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
The Examination
