The Position
Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
The Psychiatric Nurse III position functions as the swing shift nursing supervisor at Desert Willow Treatment Center, a 24/7 psychiatric hospital providing inpatient mental health services to children and adolescents. In a supervisory role, this position assures proper patient care; medication management; and compliance with nursing standards, Joint Commission accreditation standards, Division of Public and Behavioral Health licensing standards, and Legislative Counsel Bureau auditing standards. This position coordinates the admission of children and adolescents requiring acute inpatient care into the facility during swing shift. This position directly supervises and evaluates the performance of swing shift Psychiatric Nurse IIs who are responsible for the supervision of Mental Health Technicians. This position is responsible for staff scheduling and ensuring safe and adequate patient-to-staff ratios on all patient care units at all times. This position assists the Psychiatric Nurse IV in developing and monitoring discipline specific competencies; oversees the tracking of all mandatory training for swing shift nursing staff; and provides orientation, training, and education to all new and existing swing shift nursing staff. This position also assists the Psychiatric Nurse IV in developing, reviewing, revising, and implementing policies and procedures related to patient care, nursing services, and continuous quality improvement. The Psychiatric Nurse III may be required to chair a continuous quality improvement team. The position must be able to perform all the duties of a Psychiatric Nurse II in providing direct care to patients. This position may be required to work holidays and is required to work at least one weekend shift.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nevada and three years of professional nursing experience, two of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness or mental retardation; OR one year as a Psychiatric Nurse II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    A bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or associate's degree in nursing and one year of experience.
Special Requirements
    CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
