The Position
DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Please take notice: You are applying for statewide vacancies for Parole & Probation, Highway Patrol and Capitol Police. However, the majority of the vacancies for Parole & Probation are located in Las Vegas. Therefore, you will be tested in Las Vegas or Carson City for the physical agility and written examination (please select your preferred test location in your application). Las Vegas test dates are on 4/12, 4/19, 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24 and 6/14 (If necessary). Carson City test dates are on 6/5, 6/6 and 6/7 (no reschedules for both locations). Also, test dates are subject to change. You will be interviewed during May - July (if you pass both examinations). This recruitment will close without notice when sufficient candidates (1000) have applied. Please submit your application ASAP. Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series. THIS RECRUITMENT IS FOR THE ENTRY LEVEL VACANCIES AND RECRUITMENT#19033 IS FOR THE LATERAL POLICE OFFICER VACANCIES (DPS OFFICER 2). All communication with applicants will be via-email. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of military service or public contact experience which included problem solving and applying policies to specific situations; OR Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, social work, fire science, or related field and one year of experience as described above; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, public administration, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicant must meet current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment.
    Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy.
Special Requirements
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
    This position is subject to call-out or call-back.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Statewide travel is required.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a felony in this State or of any offense, which would be a felony if committed in this state.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of any offense involving the illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them.
Additional Position Criteria
    Have you been notified that you failed a Department of Public Safety backgrounds process within the past 18 months?
    Have you ever been guilty of any crime involving moral turpitude or of infamous or notoriously disgraceful conduct? Note: A guilty conviction includes probation, community supervision, or deferred adjudication for the purposes of this application.
    Have you ever been dismissed from public service for delinquency or misconduct?
    You must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment. Do you meet this requirement?
    Have you been notified that you failed an interview by the Department of Public Safety within the past six (6) months?
    Do you want to test in Las Vegas or Carson City?
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).As part of the selection process, the Department of Public Safety will conduct:

1)*A POST Category I Physical fitness exam which consists of a vertical jump of 14 inches, Agility Run in 19.5 seconds; 30 sit-ups in 1 minute; 23 push-ups (not timed); a 300 meter-run in 68 seconds; and a 1.5 mile run in 16 minutes and 57 seconds.
2) Extensive background investigation.
3) Drug test
4) Polygraph
5) Physical examination

*Proper athletic attire such as shorts, shirts and athletic shoes are appropriate (jeans are not allowed).
