Correctional Officers maintain and supervise offenders in State correctional facilities in a controlled humane environment. This position may be at a Maximum-Security Prison.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

One year of experience as a correctional officer at the journey or trainee level which included certification as a peace officer under P.O.S.T. or its equivalent; OR one year of experience as a Correctional Officer Trainee in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.

An Associate's Degree in corrections, criminal justice, or a closely related field may be substituted for six months of the required journey level experience. |
|
Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including the physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. |

As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks. |

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. |

Pursuant to NAC 289.110 a person may not be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer if there is a documented history of physical violence. |

A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. |

The Nevada Department of Corrections may not consider an applicant for employment if they have been discharged from military service other than honorably. |
