The Position
Positions in this series manage, supervise and participate in wildland fire suppression; fire prevention and education; presuppression; equipment and facility maintenance; and forestry and fire law enforcement. Assist the Forestry Program Manager - Fire to ensure that the components of the divisions Wildland Fire Protection Program are managed and operated in an efficient, accurate and safe manner consistent with federal, State, and division regulations, policies and procedures.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
The incumbent will supervise assigned personnel to include: firefighters, seasonal firefighters and volunteer staff. This position also manages, supervises and participates in structural and wildland fire suppression, medical and hazardous material calls, and other emergencies as dispatched. This includes applying the principles of the ICS in incidents of moderate to high complexity; exercise scene management in emergency situations; evaluate complex situation and request appropriate additional resources; respond and take appropriate action in complex hazardous material emergencies; perform commercial buildings and facilities inspections; detect fire hazards and building code violations and institute corrective action; provide fire fighting training to assigned personnel; inspect, test and ensure proper operation of all fire fighting equipment within a company; maintain records and prepare reports; read and interpret building and construction plans; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and apply principles of fire prevention, inspection and investigation. The incumbent is required to pass the arduous pack test which consists of a three (3) mile walk, carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack within forty-five (45) minutes. **PLEASE NOTE: This position requires the following certifications to be attached to your application at time of submittal: 1) NFPA Firefighter I and II, 2) Fire Instructor I, 3) Wildland Engine Boss, 4) Hazardous Material Operation, 5) EMT-Basic.** When applying for this postion, you must indicate your willingess to accept employment in the following geograhical areas (found within the "Availability Tab" of your applicant profile): For Spring Creek choose "Elko"; for Wells choose "Wells; and/or for the Mt. Charleston area choose "Las Vegas". Failure to indicate your willingness to accept employment in one, a combination, or all of the areas listed will result in the denial of your application.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Associate's degree in fire science or closely related field and three years of firefighting experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year as a Firefighter II in Nevada State service.
Special Notes
    Some positions in this series are required to obtain and maintain a Nevada commercial driver's license with endorsements as specified by the agency.
    The level of emergency medical training required will be designated at the time of recruitment.
Special Requirements
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this class have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this class must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    Applicants may be required to pass a thorough medical examination and physical agility test prior to appointment and for continuing employment.
    Employees must maintain hairstyles and facial hair in a manner which will not interfere with the required use of self-contained breathing equipment.
    Positions in this series are required to work varied shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    All positions in this series must have certifications as identified by the agency at the time of application.
    Incumbents must obtain additional certifications, as identified by the agency, within one year of appointment, and must maintain those certifications as a condition of continuing employment.
Additional Position Criteria
    Nevada Class B Commerical Drivers License.
    Current NFPA Firefighter I and II certifications. Certifications MUST be attached to your application at time of submittal.
    Currently certified as a Fire Instructor I. Certification MUST be attached to your application at time of submittal.
    Currently certified as a Wildland Engine Boss. Certification MUST be attached to your application at time of submittal.
    Currently certified with Hazardous Material Operations. Certification MUST be attached to your application at time of submittal.
    Currently certifed as an EMT-Basic. Certification MUST be attached to your application at time of submittal.
    Required to obtain Fire Instructor II, and Fire Officer I within one year, Incident Commander Type IV and Strike Team Leader within two years, and Task Force Leader within three years from date of hire.
    If applying for Elko, will be required to reside within 25 miles of the duty station in Spring Creek (#5 Licht Parkway, Spring Creek NV).
    If applying for Wells, will be required to reside within 25 miles of the duty station.
    If applying for Mt. Charlestion, will be required to live within the Las Vegas Valley.
    Must indicate willingness to accept employment in Spring Creek, Nevada; Wells, Nevada; and/or the Mt. Charleston area.
The Examination
Fire Captain
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.
