Microbiologists perform a variety of microbiological, serological, parasitological, immunological, molecular and clinical laboratory tests and procedures to detect, isolate and identify microorganisms in milk, blood, urine, feces, tissue and other samples; analyze, record and report test results in assigned program areas such as disease control and clinical and environmental testing.
-This full-time position is located at the University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada State Public Health Laboratory. The primary responsibility is to supervise, coordinate, and oversee the overall operation of the Nevada State Health Laboratory Clinical Section which is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Water Bacteriology section which is certified by both the State of Nevada Department of Environmental Protection and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the CDC/LRN Public Health Preparedness (PHEP) Bioterrorism Section and surge capacity management for the Chemical and Radiological PHEP sections. Duties include but are not limited to: hiring, training, and supervising clinical laboratory scientists/medical technologists and laboratory technicians; establishing and maintaining lab policies; developing appropriate quality control and assurance procedures; ensuring safety compliance; maintaining current knowledge of technological advances; participating in long-range planning, developing performance measures for the Clinical and Water Bacteriology Departments; developing cost analyses and monitoring expenditures; meeting regularly with existing and potential clients and developing action plans; responsibility for the Clinical and Water Bacteriology applications of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), documenting issues, defining software needs, evaluating software effectiveness; acting as the Technical Consultant for the Health Authority clinics in Nevada; processing and analyzing samples using approved methodologies while adhering to QA/QC protocols; responding to emergency calls during scheduled and non-scheduled work hours; and other relevant duties as assigned.
-The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, with participation in the weekend/holiday rotation schedule. Occasional overtime is required when needed during public health emergencies. This position is contingent upon funding and does not provide lay-off rights. NOTICE: Per Nevada Legislature, State of Nevada Classified employees are currently subject to a mandatory unpaid furlough requirement of six days per fiscal year effective July 1, 2011. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in microbiology, medical technology or closely related field and five years of progressively responsible professional experience as a microbiologist or medical technologist in a laboratory setting conducting various tests on milk, water, and food products and performing clinical, bacteriological, mycobacteriological, mycological, parasitological, and serological analysis; OR one year as a Microbiologist IV in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience |

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Medical Microbiology or equivalent plus a minimum of 5 years of experience in a Clinical Microbiology Laboratory performing emergent infectious disease testing, which included supervisory responsibilities. |

Applicants must either: A) be ASCP licensed as a General Supervisor; or B) demonstrate relevant clinical laboratory experience within a licensed laboratory to obtain their licensure within two months of hire. |

This position requires working knowledge of Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, and Virology. |

This position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience presenting information to large groups. |

Knowledge and experience in Food Microbiology, Water Microbiology and PCR testing methods desirable. |

Knowledge of newborn screening desirable. |

This position requires occasional overtime during public health emergencies and as needed during peak periods. |

This position participates in the weekend/holiday rotation work schedule. |
