PAY GRADE: 48
The salary range indicated in this announcement is based on the Employee/Employer retirement compensation schedule. An employer-only option is available at a reduced salary range. Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10.

JOB INFORMATION
Work Type: Permanent, full time vacancies as they may occur
in this geographical location.
Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives.

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public
administration, business administration, criminal justice, or related field and three years of management experience which included supervision of law enforcement personnel, budget preparation and control, and participation in the development of policy and procedures, one year of which was equivalent to a DPS
Captain in Nevada State service; OR one year of experience as a DPS Captain in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of law enforcement education and experience.
Special Notes
Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy.
Applicant must meet and maintain current Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
Special Requirements
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
This position is subject to call-out and/or call-back.
Statewide travel is required.
Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
The Examination
If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).

DPS Major T & E exam
The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. Absence of experience/training asked for in a question is not necessarily disqualifying. Failure to answer the questions will result in a score based solely on the application.
Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
1) Indicate whether you have completed the Nevada State Certified Public Manager program and/or Command College (FBI, Northwestern).
2) Describe if you have any of the following:
a) Associates Degree or equivalent (60 semester credits) in Criminal Justice, Organizational Management, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field;
b) Bachelor's Degree or equivalent (120 semester credits) in Criminal Justice, Organizational Management, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field;
c) Master's Degree in Criminal Justice, Organizational Management, Business Management, Public Administration or a related field; or
d) Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Organizational Management, Business Management, Public Administration or related field.
3) Describe your experience, including the number of months and/or years, with Legislative preparation and Legislative testimony and/or Bill Draft Requests, review of current judicial decisions, and federal, state or municipal laws.
4) Describe your experience, including the number of months and/or years, with the management of major crimes against persons or property; pre-sentence investigation; background investigations; administrative investigations; and/or intelligence.
5) Describe your experience, including the number of months and/or years, with critical incident or special operations management (i.e. Fernley Flood, Carson Fire, Lake Tahoe Fire, Laughlin River run, New Year's Eve, Hot August Nights) or any other tactical operation in which Operational Planning was needed and/or any investigations Operation in which Operational planning was needed.
6) Describe your experience, including the number of months and/or years, with Task Force Management (i.e., ICE Teams, Fugitive Apprehension Unity, Tri-Net, etc.).
7) Describe your experience, including the number of months and/or years, with Criminal Offender Management.
8) Describe if you have the following experience:
a) Completion of training related to Pre-Disciplinary Hearing Officer, Specificity of Charges and/or Findings preparation; or
b) Experience conducting Pre-Disciplinary Hearings, preparation of Specificity of Charges and/or Findings.
9) Indicate your level of POST Certification:
a) Intermediate POST Certification (no equivalency);
b) Advanced POST Certification (no equivalency);
c) Management POST Certification (no equivalency); or
d) Executive POST Certification (no equivalency).
10) Describe your experience, including the number of months and/or years, with budget and fiscal management principles and practices.
