The Position
Public Safety Dispatcher's perform technical communications work in the operation of a district, central or statewide communications center including dispatching enforcement units and other emergency mobile units; researching various criminal justice records systems and transmitting required information.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.
THE ELIGIBLE LIST ESTABLISHED FROM THIS RECRUITMENT WILL BE USED TO FILL FUTURE VACANCIES THAT MAY OCCUR IN ELKO, NV and therefore applicants must be willing to work in this geographical location. Under close supervision incumbents receive training involving technical communications work in the operation of a district, central, or statewide communications center including but not limited to: providing assistance to law enforcement units in both routine and emergency situations; dispatching enforcement units and other emergency mobile units from a computerized dispatch center; researching various criminal justice records systems and transmitting the required information; placing telephone calls for officials and registered vehicle owners as appropriate; providing assistance to other law enforcement agencies as requested; maintaining a variety of logs and records; and preparing statistical summaries on center activities. NOTE: This is the entry level in the series and provides for semi-automatic progression to Public Safety Dispatcher II and III (pay grade 29, $34,598-50,571/yr and pay grade 31, $37,563-$55,206/yr respectively) upon meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. NOTE: As a condition of employment, all new hires to the Department will be required to sign an overtime/compensatory time agreement indicating their willingness to accept compensatory time in lieu of paid overtime when requested.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or the equivalent and two years experience in clerical, data entry, telephone switchboard or radio telephone work; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience can be substituted for high school education.
Special Notes
    Incumbent must pass the NCIC certification examination within six months of appointment and every two years as a condition of continuing employment.
    Applicants must meet the minimum typing speed established by the agency at the time of recruitment.
    Those candidates who are successful in being scheduled for an interview will also be given a skills assessment exercise immediately after the job interview.
Special Requirements
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    Working varying shifts, weekends and/or holidays is required.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
Additional Position Criteria
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a dispatcher position if they have been convicted of a felony in this state or of any offense, which would be a felony if committed in this state.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a dispatcher position if they have been convicted of a gross misdemeanor in this state or of any offense, which would be a gross misdemeanor if committed in this state.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a dispatcher position if they are a fugitive from Justice (have any outstanding warrants)
    Applicant must be able to type 40 Net WPM and provide a signed typing certificate from a certified testing center. Note: Self-administered on-line tests certificates will not be accepted.

The Examination

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience.
