The Position
DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
CURRENTLY THERE ARE 3 VACANCIES IN THE CAPITOL POLICE DIVISION IN CARSON CITY.
Capitol Police Officers work under general supervision in the Capitol Police Division at the journey level. Incumbents perform foot and vehicular patrol of State owned and leased property; check for unsecured doors and windows, vandalism, water leaks, and safety hazards; administer first aid in emergencies and/or call emergency personnel; patrol the Governor's Mansion and adjacent grounds and investigate suspicious circumstances or persons in the area. Some positions are assigned to a 24-hour desk operation where they receive and relay information to on-duty officers; maintain a daily incident log; operate a two-way radio base station; answer incoming calls to the Governor's Mansion and screen for threatening, obscene or harassing callers; and provide the public with general information and assistance in locating public building. Positions assigned to the Capitol Police Division do not automatically progress to DPS Officer II.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of military service or public contact experience which included problem solving and applying policies to specific situations; OR Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, social work, fire science, or related field and one year of experience as described above; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, public administration, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicant must meet current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment.
    Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy.
Special Requirements
    This position is subject to call-out or call-back.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
Additional Position Criteria
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. Can you meet this requirement?
    Due to the nature of the positions in Capitol Police, they require graduation as a Category I Peace officer from a Nevada POST approved law enforcement academy. Do you have this training?
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. Can you meet this requirement?
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a felony in this State or of any offense, which would be a felony if committed in this state. Have you been convicted of a felony in the State of Nevada or a conviction in another state which would be a felony if committed in this State?
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of any offense involving the illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances. Have you been convicted of any offense involving the illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances?
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence. Have you ever been convicted of domestic violence?
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime. Have you been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime?
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them. Have you used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to you?
    Have you been notified you failed a Department of Public Safety Interview or Backgrounds process within the past 18 months?
    Have you ever been guilty of any crime involving moral turpitude or of infamous or notoriously disgraceful conduct? Note: A gulty conviction includes probation, community supervision, or deferred adjudicaiton for the purposes of this application.)
    Have you ever been dismissed from public service for delinquency or misconduct?
The Examination
As part of the selection process, the Department of Public Safety will conduct:
1) A POST Category I Physical fitness exam which consists of a vertical jump of 14 inches, Agility Run in 19.5 seconds; 30 sit-ups in 1 minute; 23 push-ups (not timed); a 300 meter-run in 68 seconds; and a 1.5 mile run in 16 minutes and 57 seconds.
2) Extensive background investigation.
3) Drug test
4) Polygraph
5) Physical examination

The applicant is only required to pay for their physical examination.

The tentative test dates scheduled are as follows: 4/22/2011; 5/26/2011; 7/1/2011. You will be e-mailed a notice scheduling you for a test date. Please note: Both exams are conducted on the same day.
DPS OFFICER 1 (13.207) Written Exam
The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
